Background

Fiscal Year 2013 was a transition year for this pathway. As the development of fuels with significantly increased safety benefits, now called “accident tolerant fuels” moves forward, the Department of Energy Fuel Cycle Technologies Program’s Advanced Fuels Campaign is taking the lead on all the associated research and development activities. Test facilities developed in the Advanced Light Water Reactor Nuclear Fuels Pathway will be used to support this work. The LWRS Program will maintain the lead role in performing analyses to determine the potential impact of advanced nuclear fuel rods on reactor safety margins via coordination with the Risk Informed Safety Margin Characterization Pathway. No new advanced light water reactor fuels development activities are planned under the LWRS Program.
