Flexible Plant Operation and Generation

The Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program’s Flexible Plant Operation and Generation pathway conducts research and development to evaluate economic opportunities, technical methods and licensing needs for light water reactors to directly supply energy to industrial processes.

Objectives, Research Areas and Outcomes

Objectives

Develop and support the deployment of technologies to increase the flexibility of nuclear power plants operation and generation by diversifying their products and revenue.

Outcomes

Technical and economic assessment of flexible plant operation and generation.

Understand and implement appropriate control interfaces for dispatching thermal and electrical energy to tertiary industrial processes.

Assess potential damage at extended operations and ensure safety when a nuclear power plant’s operation is extended.
