Mitigation Methods and Technologies

Goal

This research area aims to develop mitigation methods and technologies, such as radiation-resistant materials, advanced repair welding, etc., to enable extended operation of the existing light water reactor fleet and enhance the economics of the fleet.

Outcome

The goal is to develop advanced welding technologies required for reactor repair and upgrade to support reactor life extension beyond 80 years.

Stakeholders can use the developed mitigation methods and technologies to improve best practices for component replacement and repair for extended operation of the existing light water reactor fleet.

Planned Major Accomplishments

  • Innovations in advanced welding technologies for highly irradiated materials.

  • Technically sound data/results to support American Society of Engineers code and NRC approval for applications of the advanced welding technique.

  • Development of field deployable welding equipment.
